Financed by UNICEF, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and the Government of Mongolia and implemented by People In Need INGO, Mongolian Sustainable Finance Association and the Mongolian University of Sciences and Technology, the CHIP package was developed by leading international and local scientists and experts that designed an affordable, yet effective, solution to take down chimneys and eliminate the use of coal in people’s Gers. Starting from Bayankhongor in 2019, the project has been enhanced to Umnugobi, Dundgobi, Gobi-Altai, Orkhon aimags and Bayanzurkh and Songinokhairkhan districts with numerous benefits of better in-ger air quality, cost-efficiency, better health, and time saving.

Project Objective

Reducing air pollution through efficient, accessible and innovative coal-free insulation, heating, and ventilation solutions for Mongol Gers

Project Activities

In cooperation with CHIP implementing partners, MSFA works to expand access to CHIP financial products and its policy environment, enhance the capacities of loan officers through trainings, and increase the public awareness of CHIP green financial products at target locations.

Design of sustainable financing mechanisms to support ger households to adopt Cooking Heating Insulation Product (CHIP) in Bayankhongor city

Project Impact

In Bayankhongor, Umnugobi, Dundgobi, Orkhon, Gobi-Altai, Orkhon aimags and Bayanzurkh and Songinokhairkhan districts, a total of 2200 CHIP packages have reached households by 2022. (1208+ children; 62+ disabled people; 69+ pregnant women; 434+ elderly people; 225+ single headed households). With eased conditions, CHIP green loans have been issued by KHAAN bank, Xac bank, State bank of Mongolia, and Transcapital, Netcapital, GSB, and Numur NBFIs.

"With no need to constantly mingle with coal ash and dust, and to clean the house day and night, CHIP saves a lot of time. Instead, I watch movie, read books, and visit my families.
